Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Inherently Much Better For SEO

Posted by

In reaction to a thread on Reddit, Google Search Advocate John Mueller states there’s no inherent SEO advantage to utilizing WordPress compared to coding a site yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar question numerous professionals run into in their careers.

Is WordPress much better for SEO than coding your own website?

Other variations of that question include, “is WordPress better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress much better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the response is always the exact same.

WordPress isn’t naturally better for SEO than any other option. It is among many methods to construct a website that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In response to whether using WordPress is much better for SEO than coding your own site, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, however you can focus more on the material if you don’t invest all your time creating a brand-new CMS for yourself. (some individuals prefer making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most considerable advantage WordPress offers is the ease of usage compared to by hand writing code.

However, that’s just advantageous to the website owner. It makes no distinction to Google if a site is constructed with WordPress.

This concern comes up frequently and deserves reviewing due to the misinformation circulating around WordPress and SEO.

For example, take the second-most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread directly beneath Mueller’s.

A private claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress sites more efficiently than other CMSs.

That’s incorrect, though the myth of WordPress being better for SEO continues to persist.
